Establishing Licencing Options

Introduction

Teachers put considerable effort into developing, refining and maintaining their Learning Materials. Teachers are generally willing to share these Learning Materials, especially if doing so created access to a wider set of shared teaching resources from other teachers. Understandably, this sharing of Learning Materials should be subject to certain conditions, in particular acknowledging the fact that credit must be given to the creator. For this reason, it is important that the creator retains copyright. Creative Commons licenses give everyone from individual creators to large institutions a standardized way to grant others permission to use their creative work under copyright law.

Requirement

What we need to support the objectives of this project is a means of sharing Learning Materials between teachers, through the online platform of the AEDIL Dairy Hub, through which the creator retains copyright of their material, and other teachers can use the Learning Materials, subject to certain constraints around distribution, remixing, adapting and building upon the material for commercial or non-commercial use.

Creative Commons Licences

There are six different license types, listed from most to least permissive here:

CC BY

This license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use. CC BY includes the following elements:

A black and white circle with a person in it

AI-generated content may be incorrect. BY: credit must be given to the creator.

CC BY-SA

This license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms. CC BY-SA includes the following elements:

A black and white circle with a person in it

AI-generated content may be incorrect. BY: credit must be given to the creator.
A white circle with a black arrow in it

AI-generated content may be incorrect. SA: Adaptations must be shared under the same terms.

CC BY-NC

This license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. CC BY-NC includes the following elements:

CC BY-ND

A white circle with black lines in it

AI-generated content may be incorrect. ND: No derivatives or adaptations of the work are permitted.

How do I apply a Creative Commons Licence?

You can license your work by marking it with the specific CC license you choose. This marking can be as simple as a bit of text stating the license in a copyright notice, or as complex as embedding the license information on your website using the HTML code associated with the particular license. We strongly recommend including a link to the applicable license (e.g., https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).

As part of this, in uploading Learning Materials to the Dairy Hub, Teachers are advised to mark their materials as Copyright protected. A template will be provided for this.
